Apple iPad gets new Split keyboard feature to allow faster and easier typing. With onscreen keyboard split into two parts, you can type faster with thumbs as against slow typing with fingers. iOS 5 software update should add Split keyboard feature to your Apple iPad device. You can enable or disable this feature as per requirement.
Using Split Keyboard feature on iPad device
Once you update iPad software to iOS 5 version, split keyboard feature should be enabled and available for use by default on your iPad.
To activate split keyboard feature, press the hold the keyboard key located at bottom right part of the on-screen keyboard on iPad. Select Split option among undock and split options. This will split keyboard into two parts each aligned to either side of the screen.
You can also position each split part up or down – just press and hold the keyboard key, move it up or down to move split parts of keyboard up or down.

Turn Off & disable Split keyboard feature on iPad
1. Tap on Settings icon on the home screen to open default Settings screen. Then tap on General option on the left sidebar.
2. Among available options, tap on Keyboard option. This will open screen with various keyboard setting like spelling, capitalization, international keyboards and so on.
3. Slide the status from ON to OFF next to Split keyboard option. Once split keyboard is turned off, keyboard will not split into two parts even when you attempt to use keyboard key routine for splitting keyboard (as explained above).
